Surviving Edged Weapons

We're excited to announce our upcoming Knife Defense Workshop, where you'll gain invaluable skills to protect yourself in potentially dangerous situations.

It's essential to raise awareness and equip ourselves with the right knowledge to stay safe in any situation.

First and foremost, if you find yourself in a dangerous situation involving an edged weapon, remember that your safety is the top priority. Always prioritize getting yourself to safety and contacting the authorities.

Whether you're a law enforcement officer, security personnel, or someone interested in self-defense, This will not only teach you effective techniques but also emphasize safety precautions throughout the process.

Finally, remember that training with edged weapons is meant to provide you with the skills and knowledge necessary to defend yourself in real-life situations, not to incite violence. It's essential to approach this training with a responsible mindset and utilize it ethically and lawfully.

Stay safe, everyone!

Remember, educating ourselves about surviving edged weapons and training safely can make a significant difference when faced with potential danger. Share this information with your loved ones and let's spread awareness together.

Tom Billinge of WarYoga will present the first official WarYoga workshop

On Sunday, September 24th from 10 am to 2 pm, Tom Billinge of WarYoga will present the first official WarYoga workshop at MSTA.

WarYoga, an ancient system of physical and spiritual culture, continues to be developed by Tom, who has spent years researching and practicing the ancient martial conditioning systems of India and Iran, as well as the echoes that can be found in the European traditions.

In this inaugural workshop, Tom will present the Indian system of Vyayam as used by Kushti wrestlers in the subcontinent. Tom has spent a significant amount of time in the Indian akharas (gyms) training with the pahalwans (wrestlers) and learned first hand from gurus whose lineage stretches back hundreds of years.

The benefit of Vyayam is that it not only creates immense power and strength, but also promotes longevity of physical activity by building healthy joints and ligaments. It is primarily a system of physical health that also creates practical strength.

In this 4-hour workshop, you will first learn the three foundational bodyweight exercises used by champion wrestlers. You will then learn how to load and use the gar nāl, a stone neck ring. You will also learn how to lift the nāl, an Indian lifting stone.

Then, the focus will go to the gada, where you will work on perfecting the rumali mace swing.

Finally, you will have the chance to learn how to use the samtola (Indian log bell) and the jori (pair of large wooden clubs).

While some of the exercises have made their way to the USA, this is the first time that the complete system has been presented outside of India. Don't miss this chance to learn the secrets that made grappling legends like the Great Gama invincible.

Ving Tsun Workshop

With Chris Ilao

10AM to 1PM

“Ving Tsun Lineage:
Ip Man- Wong Shun Leung- Philipp Bayer- Kevin Gledhill- Christopher ILao (My family Lineage spells it Ving Tsun but the sound is still pronounced Wing Chun. The spelling is to differentiate between lineages)

Christopher ILao has over 13 years experience as a practitioner in my present Ving Tsun family lineage. In 2015 I was given the go ahead by Philipp Bayer (Teacher’s teacher) and Kevin Gledhill (my teacher) to start instructing in Ving Tsun. I’ve been teaching out of Freehold, NJ in a school called Synergy Martial Arts and some private students in my home ever since.

The workshop will bring attention to the introduction of my family lineages Ving Tsun concepts to you all. By doing many partner drills that I’ll introduce to you, we will focus on the start of conditioning the good behaviors of the concepts of “Lin Sil Daai Dar” (Translation: Attacking and defending simultaneously) and “Loi Lau, Hoi Sung; Lat Sau Jik Jung” (Translation: Intercept what comes, pursue of what goes and when there’s no obstruction in our way attack instinctively). We will leave time also for a Q&A of anything you may be interested in asking in reference to the Ving Tsun we went over and didn’t go over.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to teach all to the best of my abilities of what my instructors passed on to me. See you all in October! “
